Fridge Voyeur is a virtual visit into the chill zone of the Spoon Crew — our team, our friends, and some of your favorite wellness gurus. We may eat a lot of plants, but you better believe there’s a whole lot of variety, and a bit of naughty, going on behind closed doors. We know you want a peek ;).

This week, we’re peeking into the fridge of Instagram sensation, Michael Tommasiello.

Splendid Spoon: Hey Michael! Tell us a bit about yourself.
Michael Tommasiello: Hi! Thank you so much for chatting with me! I got into plant-based eating a few months ago and have been exploring all facets of it since then, which is how I discovered you guys! I’m 31, born and raised in NY and spend my day doing digital strategy for brands and celebrities.

SS: What are the 5 kitchen staples you can’t live without?
MT:

  1. Frozen Berries! I eat them ALL the time instead of snacking on cookies.
  2. Cauliflower crust. Sometimes you just crave pizza and having a good cauliflower crust is imperative.
  3. Splendid Spoon smoothies. Seriously, they’re perfect for when I’m running out of the gym and to my office.
  4. Bulletproof Coffee. It’s life changing. Everyone should try it.
  5. Black lentils! Lentils are a great source of protein and mix well with SO many different things, so this is a must.

SS: What’s the weirdest thing in your fridge?
MT: Non dairy cheese. Still tastes just as good as cheese though!

SS: How do you make sure to keep up the good food habits you began in January as the year progresses?
MT: I feel like I’ve gotten into a really good rhythm at Performix House with Angelo Grinceri and he honestly helps me a ton. Whenever I’m teetering on eating things that are really self indulgent, a quick text to him will quickly remind me to stay on course.

SS: What’s your fave sweet and what’s your fave savory?
MT: Acai bowls. I LOVE acai bowls. I order one probably every other day. For savory dishes, Indian Daal is incredible. My girlfriend is Indian so she’s been showing me a lot of different types of food from all over the country and its incredible because most of it is plant-based and incredibly flavorful.

SS: If you were one thing in your fridge, what would it be?
MT: Ice cream. Or a bottle of white wine.

SS: What food do you turn to when you want something comforting or nostalgic? Although we eat to keep our bodies strong and healthy, food also connects us to our past, to friends, and to different times in our lives.
MT: Chilaquiles or chicken tortilla soup. My mom is Mexican and nothing reminds me of home or waking up in my room on a Sunday morning more than that.

Be sure to check out Michael’s Instagram, @nydoorman, and catch him cultivating the online voices of celebrities (behind the scenes, of course!).
