Summer trips can be relaxing for the mind, but all of the extra servings of dessert and drinks can be exhausting for your body. Lauren, recently back from a trip to the Caribbean, shares her insights on keeping up with healthy habits while still enjoying your vacation.

Do you ever feel like you return from vacation and immediately need to detox? I totally know the feeling. After piña coladas, snacks by the pool, and ice cream every night, you can definitely come home feeling a bit heavier and more bloated than when you left.

It’s crazy how so many people prep for vacation by eating healthy and working out, but then they totally switch their lifestyle once they reach their destination.  I’m definitely a routine person, so I try to set some plans each day, even if that means reading a book by the ocean.

On a recent trip to St. John, I tried to keep some healthy habits in mind while still being sure to treat myself and enjoy the time. These quick and easy tips are sure to help you come back feeling healthier during your next trip.

  1. Get up and get moving. – While it’s nice to sleep in on vacation, try to get up at a reasonable time at least a few of the days so you aren’t too thrown off of your normal routine. Hit up the hotel gym or go for a nice walk outside. Even if it’s just for 20 minutes, starting your day off with some cardio helps to get your heart rate moving.
  2. Make your own meals if possible. – We had a kitchen on our trip and it was SO nice to be able to have healthy options stocked in the fridge. Room doesn’t have a full kitchen? Stock up your mini fridge or room with healthy and filling snacks. My favorite option is Splendid Spoon smoothies.
  3. Try intermittent fasting. – I do this regularly because of my hypothyroidism, and I follow the 16-8 method. You fast for 16 hours and have an 8 hour window to eat throughout the day. Definitely talk to your doctor first, but it’s a great way to let your body reset before starting the next day of vacation eating.
  4. Don’t sweat the small stuff. - It’s important to remember that you’re on vacation for a reason… to relax! Don’t worry about sticking to any crazy diets and make sure that you enjoy yourself while you’re there.
