As far back as there are pumpkin pie recipes, some variation of pumpkin pie spice is used: A 1675 British recipe for "pumpion pye" calls for cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, and pepper.

Most spices in the blend – like cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, and cloves – are native to Southeast Asian islands. Some could be found exclusively on a few island groups that are now part of Indonesia.
