Fridge Voyeur is a virtual visit into the chill zone of the Spoon Crew — our team, our friends, and some of your favorite wellness gurus. We may eat a lot of soup and stews, but there’s a whole lot of variety, and a little bit of naughty, going on behind closed doors. We know you want a peek ;)

This week we’re peeking into the fridge of Komal Patel, a plant-focused, turmeric-loving food blogger.

Splendid Spoon: Hey Komal! Tell us a little bit about yourself.
Komal Patel: I currently work as a Risk Analyst by day, and I blog at Sweet & Masala by night. I’m obsessed with food and it’s always been an important part of my life. I love trying new recipes and combinations — I hope to write my own Indian Fusion Cookbook one day!

SS: What are the 5 staples you can’t live without?
KP: Jalapeños, chili powder, cheese, turmeric, mushrooms.

SS: What’s the weirdest thing in your fridge?
KP: Homemade lamb broth. It took me over a week to bring out all the flavors from the bone! Bone Broth is all the rage right now, so I wanted to try making it from scratch.

SS: What’s your favorite sweet and what’s your favorite savory?
KP: Anything chocolate! At the moment I’m obsessed with dark chocolate covered almonds. I always have a bag of them in my drawer at work. My savory would be ramen. I love all the different veggie varieties.

SS: If you were one thing in your fridge, what would it be?
KP: Pickled red onions. I’m a little sweet, a little sour, and very raw. My mood behaves like a chameleon, constantly changing color, just like the onions change from red to pink.

SS: What food do you turn to when you want something comforting or nostalgic? Although we eat to keep our bodies strong and healthy, food also connects us to our past, to friends, and to different times in our lives.
KP: When I want something comforting I immediately turn to Indian food. I love a well-made chicken or vegetable curry. My favorite recipe is chickpeas served in a light, but heavily spiced gravy, with a side of roti. It reminds me of my mom and grandmas.
