Chock full of vegetables, aromatic spices and whole grains, these plant-based grain bowls are not only satisfying, they’re exceptionally nutritious. Whole grains are a cornerstone of a nutritious diet and offer copious health benefits.

What are whole grains?

Whole grains are the entire seed of a plant, consisting of the bran, germ, and endosperm. When a grain is processed, the bran and the germ are removed, leaving just the starchy endosperm. Through this process, the grain loses about 25% of the protein content and the majority of the nutrients. Thus, consuming whole grains provides more protein, fiber, vitamins, and minerals than their refined counterparts.

What are the health benefits of whole grains?

Research shows that whole grains reduce the risk of heart disease, stroke, cancer, diabetes and obesity. The four whole grains featured (sorghum, quinoa, brown and wild rice) are all naturally gluten-free, low in calories, and are packed with filling, whole grain fiber to keep you satisfied long after your last bite.

Let’s dive deeper into the whole grains Splendid Spoon is serving up!

Sorghum

Grain Highlight:
Good for you, and the environment! Sorghum is especially eco-friendly, as the grain uses less water to grow than most grains.

Why it’s Splendid:
· Great for digestive health, 1 cup contains almost 13g of dietary fiber
· High in magnesium, which is needed for more than 300 biochemical reactions in the body

Quinoa

Grain Highlight:
Botanically quinoa is not classified as a grain, it’s a pseudo-cereal. It’s considered a whole grain because the whole seed is eaten without any parts being removed.

Why it’s Splendid:
· It’s a complete protein (contains all 9 of the essential amino acids necessary in the human diet)
· Great vegan source of protein— 1 cup provides 8g of protein
· Contains a small amount of heart healthy omega-3 fats

Brown Rice

Grain Highlight:
The difference between brown and white rice is not just color. With brown rice, only the outermost layer of the grain (the hull) is removed. This process avoids the unnecessary nutrient loss which occurs with further processing, polishing and refining.

Why it’s Splendid:
· Choosing brown rice over white rice preserves over 60% of the energy-boosting B vitamins
· 1 cup of brown rice provides over 75% daily value of manganese, which aids in energy production and antioxidant protection
· Research shows that brown rice may help to control diabetes, prevent obesity and Alzheimer’s, boost heart health, and improve digestive health

Wild Rice

Grain Highlight: Wild Rice has an earthy, nutty flavor that’s naturally high in protein and fiber. It’s actually a species of grass that grows in shallow water.

Why it’s Splendid:
· Rich in phosphorus, which is important for maintaining bone mineral density and ensuring strong bones
· Good source of folate, which is critical for pregnant women
